Mycoplasma hominis

Mycoplasma hominis is a Pleomorphic bacteria with a length of around 0.2-0.3 um.
Anaerobe - usually recovered from the lower genitourinary tract but is also known to thrive in the respiratory tract of humans.
Can be transmitted sexually 
The bodies sub mucosa usually prevents problems caused by M. hominis
Smallest bacteria capable of self-replication
Uses UGA to code for tryptophan instead of a STOP codon

Ecology

Known to live in human and primate urogenital tracts 

Create a Metronidazole resistance when symbiotically related to Trichomonas vaginalis.

Can survive for up to 1 hour in liquid specimens if protected from evaporation. 

  • Found in toilet bowls.
